Suspension clunks can come from control-arm bushes, ball joints, sway-bar links, strut mounts, dampers or other components. Suspension bush cracked or separated
Bushes isolate vibration while controlling wheel position. As they crack or soften, the wheel can move more than intended under braking and cornering. The result may be clunks, vague steering, uneven tyre wear or alignment that will not remain stable.
Dampers control spring movement. Leakage or internal wear can reduce control, while worn top mounts can create noise or binding. Dust boots and bump stops can deteriorate with age even when the damper itself is still functioning.
Brake pads and rotors are inspected for remaining material, condition and wear pattern. Some Mercedes-Benz models use wear sensors that trigger a dashboard warning when the pad reaches a threshold. The warning should be confirmed with physical inspection because rotor condition and wear across the axle also matter.
Replacing worn arms or steering components can change wheel geometry. Where required, wheel alignment should follow the mechanical repair. Aligning a vehicle with excessive bush or joint movement can produce poor results because the geometry changes as the suspension loads.
